SHS Celebrates Third LCHIP Grant |
Grant to Restore District 9 SchoolhouseThe Sutton Historical Society has been awarded its third Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP) grant award in the past four years. The Society is being awarded a $25,000 matching grant to repair and restore the historic District No. 9 South Village School House.
“This matching grant will go a long way to not only making Schoolhouse No. 9 a more attractive and useful place, but it will really help in making our little nook of Sutton, NH a very special place for our community for years to come,” said SHS Board Member and Project Manager Gary Dellert. “We’re looking forward to starting the restoration in the spring.” LCHIP grant recipients are required to match each dollar contributed by LCHIP with a minimum of one additional dollar, and to complete the funded projects according to the program’s rigorous standards. The Society is once again turning to the community to help realize its goal. SHS continues to gratefully accept donations to its Stewardship Fund in order to continue its restoration efforts and match the latest LCHIP grant. “We are very grateful that opportunities like LCHIP exist to help our small volunteer organization achieve some very big goals,” shared Gary Dellert. “Fortunately, the schoolhouse restoration is the last major project on our list for the foreseeable future.” Entire Historic Building Exterior RestoredThis fall, the Sutton Historical Society has completed the exterior renovation of the iconic South Sutton Meetinghouse. Thanks for this amazing achievement goes to our generous donors and to the NH Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP) program for a $20,000 matching grant. The exterior restoration, including repair of clapboard siding, trim and shutters, and painting was performed by Wardell Paint & Co. to complete the restoration work.
The restoration project was several years in the making. SHS received its first LCHIP matching grant in 2019 to help restore the three-stage meetinghouse tower topped by a four-sided dome, along with improvements to dated lightning protection identified in a 2019 historic building conditions assessment. Delayed by the pandemic, the first phase was completed in the late fall of 2021. SHS is grateful that opportunities like LCHIP exist to help with some portion of funds for what are significant and costly projects for a small volunteer organization. SHS continues to gratefully accept donations to its Stewardship Fund in order to continue its restoration efforts, including the District 9 Schoolhouse restoration that is planned for 2023.
