Our Membership ~ The Energy of the Society
A fire on the cabin’s hearth was a necessity of life for our pioneer ancestors. The fire was first ignited by a spark from a tinderbox. In times when the fire was not needed, it was allowed to become glowing embers which were carefully covered by ashes to preserve their spark. When the fire was needed again, tinder was placed upon the embers. The tinder burst into flames and the fire was rekindled. Once in a while the embers would loose their glow, perhaps to much time passed between fires or the embers had not been covered properly. When this happened neighbors would share a glowing ember from their hearth and the pioneer family could rekindle its fire.
The membership of the Sutton Historical Society is like the glowing embers on the settler’s hearth. Each member is a hot coal which, when combined with the other members, provides the energy necessary to sustain the society.
From time to time the Society needs a special fire. It will call upon some of the membership to burst into flames and man the bake sale table, paint the schoolhouse, be a host at a function or to carry out some other task. If the membership sits idle too long, its glow can fade away and with it the energy of the society. It is time for each of us to make certain that our embers have been properly covered and that we are ready to burst into flame when the society needs our special energy. The best way to do this is to sign up to be a volunteer. By signing up you can indicate what your interests are and how you can best help the society preserve our Sutton heritage. Please contact us to get on the society’s volunteer list. Your energy (and time) is vital to the Sutton Historical Society.
