CIVIL WAR ERA SCHOOLHOUSE RESTORED

LCHIP grant helps preserve one room schoolhouse that operated from 1863 to 1954
SHS has completed restoration of the District No. 9 South Village Schoolhouse, which served students in its single room from 1863 to 1954. The Society launched the project in 2022, after receiving a $25,000 matching grant from NH’s Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP). The Schoolhouse is on the NH State Register of Historic Places, and sits just behind the iconic South Sutton Meetinghouse, which benefitted from two earlier LCHIP matching grants, in 2019 and 2021.
 
“We are so delighted that the Schoolhouse is now renewed, secured, and available again for the benefit of the community and interested visitors,” said SHS Board President Bob Wright. “This was a very substantial project for our small volunteer organization. The structure needed replacement or repair of clapboard siding, trim, ceilings, windows, and interior walls, as well as improved electrical service and site and foundation work. LCHIP’s support made it possible for us to move forward with confidence.”
 
LCHIP requires that each grant dollar be matched by at least one dollar from other sources. SHS Board Member Gary Dellert managed the project, and maintains a fundraising thermometer display on the town green. “Fortunately,” he said, “our little town really treasures its history, and we knew folks would respond to the need for matching funds and additional support.” The Historical Society also obtained grants from the 1772 Foundation and the Country Schools Association of America for specific components of the work, and from the NH Preservation Alliance for the preliminary conditions assessment. Stewardship plans are in place to make sure the Schoolhouse thrives into the future.
